The comment + question move

Comment on what's in front of you 这些花真漂亮！这种花中文怎么说？ "These flowers are so pretty! How do you say this kind of flower in Chinese?"

Then ask about their life 您是在哪儿长大的？ "Where did you grow up?"

Follow up — people love this 您有孙子吗？他们也说中文吗？ "Do you have grandkids? Do they speak Chinese too?"

Broken Chinese is fine. Pointing is fine. "How do you say this?" is a complete conversation strategy.
Memorize a handful of comments about your surroundings and a handful of questions about a person's past — hometown, family, grandchildren — and you can drive a conversation for an hour.
Ask about what genuinely interests you — history, food, their village — and a stranger becomes a free tutor with better stories.
The course trains these moves from week one — a pattern bank to memorize your personal fallback set, recall drills, and a sparring dojo — so you're equipped to walk up and talk.

Who's teaching you

I did it the expensive way — so you don't have to.

My name is Carson. I studied Mandarin at Middlebury, at ICLP in Taipei, and as a Yenching Scholar at Peking University — that's me speaking Chinese in the video. Those programs work. They also cost thousands of dollars and demand you drop your life to attend them.

I built HSK Mastery because I believe you can self-study your way from absolute beginner to full mastery — reading, writing, and speaking — if the system is honest with you.
