Talk to a native speaker with a handful of patterns.

Not thousands of words — a small set of comment + question moves, memorized cold. Here's the whole trick:

The comment + question move

Comment on what's in front of you 这些花真漂亮！这种花中文怎么说？ "These flowers are so pretty! How do you say this kind of flower in Chinese?"

Then ask about their life 您是在哪儿长大的？ "Where did you grow up?"

Follow up — people love this 您有孙子吗？他们也说中文吗？ "Do you have grandkids? Do they speak Chinese too?"

Broken Chinese is fine. "How do you say this?" is a complete strategy.
A few comments about your surroundings + a few questions about someone's past = an hour of conversation.
